My fascination with trees involves pretty much all trees - and that is from top to bottom. The trunk of a tree is also known as the main stem as it carries water up through for nourishment.
A burl - or tree knot is formed as a "last-ditch effort to save the tree’s life after an injury or infection" The knot protects a tree like it's a scar by sealing it off. Unfortunately, wood workers & collectors who love a burls design will often find them & hack them off - leaving the tree with an open wound. And sometimes it does kill the tree.
I would never intentionally hurt a tree - I photograph them every chance I get. I think the burls are very cool. I've seen trees with so many knots they look wild. In this photo I felt like the tree was singing - being vocal - sharing a moment. Not really far fetched for me as I do believe each tree is unique, vocal in its way & soulful.
PS: the Title reads as Burl Lives - long i - not lives :)
